Esme lived all her life in Tyne and Wear. She was brought up in Wallsend, Newcastle-upon-Tyne by her mother Agnes, a civil servant, and one of her aunts, Auntie Nellie.

 Esme left her Catholic grammar school to become a civil servant herself, spending most of her career at the Ministry of Pensions in Newcastle. Her mother died of cancer when Esme was still only 20. In 1966 she married David Swinney. They subsequently divorced. She married Peter Donoghue in 1984. There were no children Sadly, Esme also contracted cancer and died aged 46

 Auntie Agnes, Auntie Nellie and Esme used to visit us regularly in Coventry and I also remember holidays in Newcastle with the “Geordie” relatives. Auntie Agnes was quietly spoken but with a lively sense of humour. Auntie Nellie was a real “live wire”, a “raconteuse” and a bit of a psychic! My mother always bought leaf tea when Nellie was expected and could be persuaded to read the tea leaves. Her predictions seemed often to come true! Despite the many tragic events in her life, my cousin Esme remained a fun loving girl with a lovely smile.
